Where Are They Now? #1: Geoff Sanderson

In the mid 90's Geoff Sanderson was a force for a very weak Hartford Whalers team. He had four 30+ goal seasons for the Whale from 1992-1997 and only missed out on 30 in a five year span due to the lockout shortened season.

When the Whalers moved from Hartford to Carolina and became the Hurricanes, Sanderson's scoring dried up and he was traded twice in the 1997-98 season. With two weak seasons in Buffalo, Sanderson looked washed up and could only manage 12 and 13 goal seasons.

The Columbus Blue Jackets emerged into the NHL and Sanderson was given one last chance at being an NHL regular. He responded with his first 30 goal season in years and followed it up with another 30+ goal season in 2002-03. Sanderson would then spend the rest of his career bouncing around the NHL and playing for four different clubs including a stint in Switzerland during the 2004-05 lockout.

Sanderson played is last game with the Edmonton Oilers 2007-08 and the speedy forward never officially retired but has not played hockey since.

I did some research and I found out that Sanderson got a job this season with the New York Islanders in player development. He also does work with their affiliate the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the American Hockey League.

Sanderson was a speedy forward who played in 1104 NHL games and netted 355 goals. He had the ability to be a 30+ goal scorer year in and year out, but could not string together more then two 30+ goal seasons in a row. The one assest Sanderson did have was his speed and it kept his career going while he lost his offensive game.

If anyone would like to write Sanderson for an autograph you can try in care of the New York Islanders as I recently saw a success from him. Beware, his autograph is not pretty and you might want to send a sharpie has he signed in ball point pen.
